Hi all,

I have a handful of servers (out of 10,000) that are not showing up in the
WSUS Admin Portal.

When I run the ClientDiag on the client, I receive the following error:
VerifyWUServerURL() failed with hr=0x801901f7

In the log, I note the following messages:

I have tried stopping the service and clearing the SoftwareDistribution
folder.

I also verified that the client was not using a proxy:
Current WinHTTP proxy settings under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections\
WinHttpSettings :

Direct access (no proxy server)

I am stumped. The server is not overloaded, so this error is misleading.
There is very little on this error anywhere online.

Can anybody assist?

Thanks,
Mike

VerifyWUServerURL() failed with hr=0x801901f7
0x801901f7 is an HTTP '503' error.... System Overloaded.

Can you share the specs of this machine, including the policy
configurations, that you've got 10k servers connected to?

Hi Lawrence,

In our enviroment, we have 2 upstream servers and 9 downstream servers
scattered geographically worldwide.

This client is connected to a downstream server that has less than 500
clients connected to it. Based on the historical preformance metrics from
this server, it it well under-utilized.

What is puzzling is just a handful of the these clients are seeing the
issue. At the same time, all the rest of the clients are reporting and
syncing as expected. I am pretty certain the issue is client based, not
server based.

I would agree, Mike. Thank you for the feedback.

If it's is the same clients consistently seeing the response, then it could
be client based, but consider also that it could be network based.

Nonetheless, the '503' is what it is.

Hello,
found at http://www.wsus.info/forums/lofiversion/index.php?t5308.html
"Check your registry (on the client machine) for a Binary value in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Connections that is called WinHttpSettings. If it exists,
delete it, restart the Automatic Update service and try again. It
should work now."

It works for me too.
