Hi there,

One of my customer is getting the following error in the Windows Application
Event Log of WinXP Pro workstations:

=====================================================
Error Event ID 8 - Source crypt32 - PSTSC001W

Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from:
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootseq.txt
with error: This network connection does not exist.
=====================================================

According to MS KB article 317541 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317541),
the Update Root Certificates component should be turned off in order to solve
this issue. However the customer cannot implement this recommendation as he
is using the Update Root Certificates component for other certificates and
the workstations are not allowed to connect to the Windows Update web site
for political reasons.

Would it be possible to redirect the authrootseq.txt file to a SUS server or
other?

Thanks,
Antoine

Antoine, your interpretation of KB317541 is a common misinterpretation.

The KB article suggests that the "Update Root Certificates" component should
be turned off ONLY IF the computer in question does not have Internet access
and will never have Internet access.

Otherwise, the most likely cause for a failure of a download of a Root
Certificate using the "Update Root Certificates" component on Windows XP is
that a firewall or proxy server is blocking the client's connectivity to the
internet at that specific URL.

Note: The URL -is- valid.

Have you tried accessing the URL from Internet Explorer to test the client's
connectivity to the URL?
